Murang’a coffee to be sold at a guaranteed price of Sh 70 per kilogramme, says Iria

By The Mountain Journal

Murang’a is the first county to set up a guaranteed price of coffee to save the local farmers from manipulation by middlemen.

Governor Mwangi wa Iria said the guarnareted price of Sh70 per kilogramme of cherry  will empower the local farmers to focus on increased production.
The new price was celebrated by the farmers who have been exposed to manipulation by the society management  for decades with the commodity fetching below Sh40 per kilogramme.

Speaking during the commission of construction of Murang’a Coffee Milling plant,  the governor said  with the issuance of license to participate in the coffee auction by Capital Markets Authority (CMA) the local farmers  will be empowered.
Murang’a County Government has partnered  with  the farmers union and Cooperative Bank of Kenya  to support coffee farming.
“The days when the local farmers were exploited by the commercial millers are gone as no coffee will fetch below  Sh 70,” said the governor, adding that he will channel his energy towards production of quality coffee.
