Murang’a sons and daughters are associated with development
programmes that are uplifting the living standards of the residents over the
years.
After hundreds of Murang’a fathers and mothers participated
in the Mau Mau war, their children continued serving the nation in various
capacity
Governor Mwangi wa Iria remains an icon that during his
tenure established the largest ICU centre at the Murang’a County Referral
Hospital that has assisted in reducing the pains of hundreds of patients
seeking specialized treatment.

The 35 beds capacity facility was constructed in 21
days and has assisted more than 300 patients and majority from outside Murang’a
County since May last year.
Iria established Murang’a County Cremaries and milk
coolers centres in the villages that have in the past five years have uplifted
the living standards of the dairy farmers.
The dairy programme has maintained the milk price at
Sh35 per litre while keeping away the middlemen who were exploiting the
farmers, through non remittance of the money and underpaying them.
“ Iria has transformed Murang’a as the locals are getting
the required services in the county without travelling long distances.
Establishment of the ICU was of much importance as village harambees came
to an end following low costs for service,” said Lilian Njuguna from
Kandara.
Former Kigumo MP Jamleck Kamau during his tenure in
the constituency, supported the construction of Kigumo Girls in Kirere markets
that has transformed girl education.
Before the construction, female students were
forced to travel far away in search of secondary education as there were only
boys boarding schools among them Njiiri and Kigumo Bendera.

Kamau who founded Kigumo Endowment Scheme to
assist the needy students pursue their secondary and university education is
eying for the Murang’a Governorship position after the exit of Iria from
office.
Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary James
Macharia is another son of the county who has assisted in the
improvement of the roads networks.
Macharia is credited in the construction of Nyoka
Nyoka road, St Mary Gitugi- Mioro road, Dualling of Kenol- Sagana-
Marwa,,Ithanga Super highway among others.

“We have also witnessed construction of Kangari
market, Kigumo hospital improvement , Mau Mau road that will connect
several counties in Central with Rift Valley, and tens of ongoing
development programmes,” said Henry Mworia from Kairo market in Mathioya.
Irungu Nyakera is one of the icons that advocated the
transformation of the tea sector.
Nyakera also eying the post of governorship has
been instrumental in the tea reforms after he engaged the management of Kenya
Tea Development Agency (KTDA) after the directors resisted change.

In the 1990’s, Dr Peter Munga established Equity Building
Society that decades later was converted into a fully commercial
bank.
The bank introduced the culture of saving to the locals and
helped in the establishment of prominent businesses in Nairobi and other parts
of the country.
“ Apart from Equity Bank, Murang’a
is among the people who introduced macadamia farming. The crop has turned
thousands of former small scale farmers into millionaires,” said Timothy Kamore
from Kahumbu village.
