Laikipia: Nanyuki market gets a new status

 

The once dusty and muddy Nanyuki open air market has
acquired new status after it was rehabilitated following plea by the traders
and users.

After decades of being ignored by the former leaders, County
Government of Laikipia took a step to give the users relief to save them
from doing their business in pathetic areas.

Mohammed Karim in his 60 years appreciates gesture made the
administration of Governor Ndiritu Muriithi and his deputy John Mwaniki to give
the facility a facelift that has saved locals from wadding through the mud
during the rainy days.

“Nanyuki has been a municipality that controlled millions of
shillings annually and none of the leaders saw it wise to give the market a
face lift. Politics aside the governor came for the rescue of the neglected
persons,” said Mohammed.

 A market trader
Nyaguthii recounted how they worked in a congested environment as past regimes
ignored their plight.

“I want to thank the county government for coming to our
rescue and hope contributions to those in ‘chamas’ will increase for the benefit of members,” said Ms Nyaguthii

 During a prayers
prior to the official opening of the facility rehabilitated at millions of
shillings,  the governor urged
traders to be innovative to increase their earnings.

 Muriithi said his
administration is currently educating the locals on various interventions that
will uplift their businesses following the aftermath of Covid 19.

“ We are working on a partnership  with various investors  that will see 5,000 residents  access Sh3.3 billion  at discounted rate  to support their businesses,” said the
governor.

Eliud Muchiri an official of the Nanyuki market traders
forum  appreciated efforts made by the
county government  to give the facility a
new relief after years of working in pathetic conditions.

“ The first batch of traders will be allocated working
space, while we wait for the completion of the second and third phases,” he
said.
