A pineapple thief assaulted by guards inside a plantation

 There are
claims that Delmonte Kenya Limited guards unleashed fierce dogs, on a gang of people
found stealing pineapples in one of its plantations.

On Monday
night fracas that involved unknown number of guards and youth, Stephen Mburu
25, was  allegedly clobbered and left for
dead before he was traced by his family on Tuesday.

 A member of the gang from Blooms viilage near
Methi and Swani recounted how the guards cornered them evening.

Mburu’s sister
Mary Wambui said after the incident other members of the gang were escorted to
Ngati police post.

“All this time
my brother was dumped at the border of pineapple plantation and Methi and Swani
village,” said Wambui adding that it was inhuman to clobber somebody instead
of taking him to the police are provided in the law.

Mburu was
rushed to Thika Level Five Hospital with a swollen body before he was
discharged after his condition improved.

By the time of
going to press Delmonte Kenya Limited had not responded to issues raised
touching on brutality meted on the suspects.

Gatanga deputy
police commander Benson Muchemi said at the time of booking at the police station, there was no claim of assault reported.

“The four
suspects were taken to the police station before they were arraigned in court,”
said Muchemi. The suspects pleaded to charge of being in possession of stolen farm
produce.

Murang’a County
Assembly Member Ms Elizabeth Mwangi accused the guards of taking advantage to assault
the youth.

 In Maragua constituency, she said there is
need for the local leaders to come together and address the plight of the
youth, who are searching for employment.

“The law should
be followed by all and suspects instead of undergoing severe beating be taken
to nearby police stations,” said Mwangi.
