The Government through the
Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs has invested heavily in
infrastructure as a key enabler for technology and innovation.
ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe
Mucheru said these investments, together with their
expected short and long term impacts are a hallmark in Kenya’s development and
a testimony of our national capacity.
Mucheru in his speech delivered at Mt Kenya University, said the number
of internet users in Kenya was estimated at 22.86 million in January 2020.
The figure is an increase 3.2 million from the preceding year and this
will not stop the government from seeking more ways of ensuring inclusivity in access to internet connectivity around the country.
“The Government is happy to note that MKU has gone almost fully digital
in teaching, conducting examinations, research, and community outreach and in
all the University businesses including the hosting of this graduation ceremony,”
he said.
Education is a key factor in combating poverty and inequality in society and MKU has come up
with innovations in teaching and learning that will enable it to contribute
immensely to the attainment of Kenya Vision 2030 and Sustainable Development
Goals 2030.
MKU Chairman Dr
Simon Gicharu said for 18 years, the varsity has made a milestone in technology
and research that has impacted knowledge to the students.
He said MKU is among the pioneer institution
of higher learning that has a dedicated online platform for the learners.
The online
platform, he said has demonstrated our resilience and adaptability when we
quickly transitioned our students from brick and mortar learning to online.
“We have
televised lecturers that have demonstrated our commitment to making education
accessible to all,” said Gicharu.
In the fight against Covid 19, the chairman
congratulated a team of researchers who produced sanitisers that helped to stabilise
the price of the commodity in the market.
“The team also
innovated Kenya’s first contact tracing application, and a locally made
ventilator,” said Gicharu.
