NAIROBI: Governors threat to senate over formulae

Council of governors has
threatened to close down the devolved unit as from September 17, due to lack of
funds.

 Council’s Chairman
Wycliff Oparanya  said operations at the
counties will shut down, and send employees on leave.

He spoke after a virtual meeting with governors during an extra
ordinary meeting convened to deliberate on failure by the senate to agree on Third Generation Revenue Allocation Formulae.

“The senate has failed to safeguard interests of the county
governments in the wake of Covid 19 pandemic. The counties have no
resources  to run programmes that will
lead to shut down of services,” said  the
Kakamega Governor.

Oparanya educated the public of their powers to dissolve the
senate through a petition through the high court” said Kakamega Governor.
The council accused senate accounts committee of engaging in bribe
demanding spree by seeking for face to face meeting with Governors, to
answer
audit issues.

 The council asked EACC
and DCI to investigate the members of the committee, as it rubbished letter by
Senate to inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to arrest Murang’a
Governor Mwangi wa Iria after he ignored a summons to appear before the senate
committee.

 “The governor requested
for a virtual meeting in efforts to protect himself from Covid 19,” said COG Chairman.
Iria is the council’s vice-chairman.
