A silent war is looming between members of the national steering
committee on the implementations of tea reforms and tea directors following
clandestine meetings taking place in tea growing areas.
Three members Wanja Michuki, John Kamau and Irungu Nyakera have
been moving around in tea areas holding meeting despite a court order by
Justice Pauline Nyamweya that restrained them. Wanja is a daughter to the late Cabinet
Minister John Michuki, Kamau a journalist with Daily Nation and Nyakera is a
former Principal Secretary.
The team was declared a task force after the gazette Notice Number
4469 issued by CS Peter Munya was quashed until the hearing and determination
of a suit filed by the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA).
Already, Agriculture Food
Authority (AFA) has released timelines to be adhered to in respect to the
regulations.
The court order issued on
July 10 this year pitting KTDA against Agriculture CS, the regulator and the
Attorney General as the respondents while the committee members were listed as
interested members. The matter is scheduled to be mentioned on September 21,
for directions.
The directors are also holding meetings with the growers educating
them on the dangers that will face the sector should the regulations be implemented
in full.
The regulation calls for reduction of number of directors and
block direct overseas market which has been contested by some of the
stakeholders.
