Nyandarua: Ol Kalau set to get a functioning sewerage

Ol Kalau town is set to get transformation
upon completion of a water and sanitation project that will cost Sh684 million.

The project facilitated by the Ministry of Water
and Nyandarua County Government is designed to transform the town in Nyandarua,
and bring to an end perennial water shortage and sanitation challenges.

The project to be
implemented by Central Rift Valley Water Works Agency will give a facelift to
Nyandarua County headquarters, ending the sewerage d
isposal problem.

Water Cabinet
Secretary Sicily Kariuki launched the project saying it will transform the town
and end the water challenges that the locals have lived with for decades.

She said the project will be completed in 12
months to benefit a population of 30,000 people in the town and the
surrounding.

“Ol Kalau is the only
county headquarters in Mt Kenya region without a sewerage system. This will end
when the project is completed as it has been given priority,” she said.

She noted that the
project will see over 30,000 families direct benefit and would be completed in
the next one year.

Ol Kalou MP David
Kiaraho said the compensation should be based on market value and the agency
should therefore negotiate with the affected to agree on compensation.

“Ol Kalou town is fast
growing and sanitation is a major issue that has been ignored for a long time.
The project will go along managing the wastewater which has been a major
challenge in Nyandarua,” said the MP.

Nyandarua County
Assembly Speaker Ndegwa Wahome hailed the support between the national and the
county government to give the town a facelift.

“This is the way to go
so as to benefit our people. We should not witness differences between the
national and the county governments,” he noted.
