Fate of the 27 protected
constituencies hangs in balance should the national referendum on the
constitution reform will fail.
If the much awaited referendum
fails, the protected constituencies will
be a thing of the past, as they will
cause boundary realignments.
This week, teams of experts have been visiting
parts in Central Kenya educating the locals over the fate of Ndaragwa, Mathioya, Kangema, Othaya, Tetu,
Mukurwe ini and Mbeere North, if the trend
of rejecting the BBI will be anything to go by.
Former Kangema MP Tiras Ngahu kicked off the
debate after he detailed how the Kiharu constituency will be sliced to add up the population to Mathioya and Kangema.
“For Kangema to stand or its own parts of Murarandia and Wangu wards will be curved, while Gaturi be moved to
Mathioya,” said Ngahu.
Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro will be at
risk as his Gaturi ward will be moved to Mathioya.
There was a similar proposal 10 years ago, when the electoral body called on the locals to increase their population to 130,000 to meet the required constitutional threshold.
In the proposed
realignment, parts of Mathira will be
moved to Mukurwe ini. Othaya will also
benefit with a ward from Mukurwe ini.
Tetu’s fate will be decided by Nyeri town, whose
nearbouring parts will be affected.
Nyeri town constituency will be extended to Kieni to reclaim parts
lost to Tetu.
Other protected constituencies are Lamu East, Lamu West, Mvita, Mwatate, Wundanyi, Voi, Bura, Isiolo South, Laisamis, North
Horr, Saku, Mogotio, Samburu East,
Marakwet East, Vihiga, Bundalangi and
Galole.
