Players in tea sector have to comply with
regulations by ensuring that sales of
the produce meant for export market will
be channeled through the auction system.
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya in a
notice to the players in the sector said all the teas, except orthodox and
specialty teas shall be offered for market at the auction with effect from March 11.
Munya said the payment for tea traded at the
auction on January 11, should be remitted by the brokers to the respective
factories on or before January 25.
“The factories shall
pay at least 50 percent of payment due for the green leaf delivered to the factory on or before
January 25,” said Munya in a notice to the players.
The notice is after the President assented to the Tea Act No 23, 2020 on December 23,
last year.
Crusade by Lawyer Chege Kirundi, former Principal Secretary Irungu Nyakera and tea farmer Peter Kihungi led to the forumation of the regulations.
In the regulations that trimmed activities of Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) in the sector, Agriculture Food Authority (AFA) was bestowed with responsibility to regulate the sector.
AFA is headed by Interim Director General Antony Muriithi who has passion in tea and coffee farming.
