Tea growers want the implementation of reforms in
the sector without delay, as they petition the government to ensure they get
their improved payment starting this month.

The farmers from Murang’a who gathered at
Kanyenya ini market during a sensation of Tea Act 2020, said they are waiting
to get 50 percent of their produce as the regulations demand.

In a forum convened by the chairman of Tea Sector
Lobby Group Irungu Nyakera said the farmers demanded the appointment of members
of tea board to oversee the transition in the sector,

Nyakera said the farmers also demanded the election
of the factory directors will be held next month to bridge the gap in the
management of the sector.

“We ask Agriculture Secretary Peter Munya  to ask the Attorney General to consolidate
all cases lodged by Kenya Tea Development Agency related to the opposition on
tea reforms, to three bench judges. The growers were tired with games of hide
and seek designed to lose focus on the gains to be brought by the reforms,”
said Nyakera.
