Hundreds of tea
growers in Murang’a are warming to attend their special general meetings to add
their voice on the reforms instituted by the government.
Already, the ground is
set for the meetings at strategic positions where the police have provided
security as ordered by Interior and National Coordination Cabinet Secretary Dr
Fred Matiang’i.
Top on the agenda is
the removal of the directors and conducting fresh elections to fill the gaps that
will be left.
According to the Mt
Kenya Tea Forum office, the meetings will be held in Murang’a, Kiambu, Nyeri,
Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, and Embu, where the growers will elect their
representatives to comply with the Tea Act 2020.
Last week, President
Uhuru Kenyatta through Executive Order directed the Attorney General’s office
to institute forensic investigations against Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA), and its subsidiary companies. The order also
called for the factory elections to be held within 60 days.
Agriculture and
Livestock Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya two days ago wrote to Dr Matiang’I seeking protection of the farmers’ meetings across the country.
The first meetings
will be held at Njunu, Makomboki, Ikumbi,
Nduti, Kanyenya ini, Githambo tea factories where the administrative
officers will be present.
On March 31, the meetings
will be held at Kiru, Gatunguru, Gacharage
and Ngeere.
