Nanyuki Water and Sewerage Company
(Nawasco) will partner with plot selling firms in the development of water and sewerage
infrastructure.

Already, the water company is
implementing connecting Taji and Livian Estates to the sewer line through a partnership
with Unison Sacco Limited and the committee.

The areas targeted to be connected with the
sewer and piped water are those in the outskirts of Nanyuki town
overlooking  Daiga Hills to the East
along the Nanyuki- Rumuruti road.

Nawasco Managing Director Eng
Kennedy Gitonga said they have set aside approximately Sh40 million to connect
the two estates with the required utility to enable the residents to acquire
titles from the government.

“At Taji we shall spend
Sh34 million for the construction of the 10 kilometres sewer line that will be
connected with the Nanyuki sewerage plant. The project designed to connect more
than 15,000 residents is 70 percent,” said Gitonga.

The pre-treated waste water, he
said will be pumped to the main sewerage plant located 10 kilometres away, as
part of improving sanitation.

“ At Livia Tower estates,  there is a committee in charge of the 600
plot owners who have raised each Sh5,000 to facilitate the construction of the
sewer line,” Peter Kamore a resident in the estate.

Resident Engineer Samuel Muiru
said there will be an automatic pump that will pump the pre-treated raw sewer
to the main treatment plant.

“This one of the first sewer
projects in Kenya due to its kilometres long stretch. Waste water from the
homes will be collected and channeled to the septic tank for onward transmission
to the treatment plant,” said Muiru.

A water distribution tank, he added, will be
constructed near Mukima junction to supply the entire area with clean water.

The Outgoing Laikipia County
Environment and Water Executive Njenga Kahiro said the partnership will help in
the growth of the areas and promote the economic activities in Nanyuki town.

Governor Nderitu Muriithi, Mr Kahiro said, ordered that the developers must ensure the residents be served with
electricity, piped water and sewerage facilities.

“This part of planning for the
town and the surrounding area will enable the locals to have access to the crucial
service that has been missing in many of the developments,” said Kahiro.

Provision of clean water, the Executive said, has
led hundreds of people to look for parcels of land near Nanyuki town.
