A report has exposed
the rot in the land management in Nyandarua where churches, politicians,
prominent businessmen, and NGOs’ are on the list of shame.
In an audit report on
land, it has been exposed that thousands of acres of public utility land are in
the wrong hands.
The audit exposes a well-calculated and intended land-grabbing mania captured
in the 43 pages report where some influential businessmen and companies going
on a land acquisition spree.
The report reflects
the county government’s slowness in repossessing some of the public utility
lands, instead opting to enter into the negotiations with the ‘owners’ due to the
fear of political implications.
The task force was
appointed by Governor Francis Kimemia who spoke tough on repossessing the
stolen lands and has since softened his stand, opting for an alternative dispute
committee to negotiate with the public landowners.
The public land identified to have changed hands
include education offices, Kenya Prisons in Ol Kalau, Reparains and
conservation, road reserves, and boreholes. Land set for the establishment of a
home for the aged has also changed hands to a private developer.
Acting Lands Executive
Member Mr Raphael Njui says most of the landowners have genuine documents given
to them by defunct Local Authorities officials and corrupt lands officials.
“We are determined to repossess all stolen public land that includes land for
learning institutions, slaughterhouses, government offices, hospitals among
others,” said the county government official.
The government, he added, was interested to look
for the alternative dispute resolution mechanism on the issue, before a
decision is reached.
