Murang’a county government has offered full
scholarships to three thousand secondary school students in efforts to increase the number of professionals. Through Nyota Zetu Initiative, the educational
intervention programme that started in 2019, has been hailed as the first in
the country that has shown interest in the children from the humble background.
The
Governor Mwangi wa Iria programme has the backing of the county assembly as the
MCAs are involved in the selection of the needy learners to benefit from the
public funds.
Every
year, the best from the schools within the 35 wards are selected to benefit
from the county government full scholarship through the secondary school
education programme.
Iria
distributing the kitty to the learners said Murang’a has been ranked the first
county to cater for the interest of the poor who had been at risk of dropping
out of schools due to the poverty situation in their backyard.
The first batch of beneficiaries is in form
three and hope 95 percent will attain
university entry grades.
“
This is a mission designed to help the children
from the villages compete effectively with the rich. The county assembly
will enact a policy to ensure the coming governors will not do away with the
education programme designed for the poor,” said the governor.
Majority of the students will join national
and extra county secondary schools which they chose at the registration of the KCPE.
