Dairy farmers in Murang’a will smile to the bank following the increment of milk price from Sh35 per litre to Sh40 per litre.
Governor Mwangi wa Iria announced the new prices with effect from September 1, saying the cooperative societies should abide or pave the way to a new management committee.
Iria is also campaigning for the Presidency next year under the Usawa Kwa Wote Party saying he has the capacity to transform the country through effective agriculture policies.

The governor, who has a passion for the industry, directed the county enforcement unit to deal with middlemen exploiting the farmers through offering poor prices.
“ From today a litre of milk should not go below Sh40, this is an order as I know there are rogue merchants who are colluding to buy the product at cheap rate from the farmers,” said the governor.
He further ordered for the reduction of artificial insemination costs from Sh500 to Sh300 in efforts to cushion the farmers from effects of Covid 19, focusing on increased production of milk.
During the meeting he read a riot act to management committees at Kangari, Kahuro and Nginda for allegedly working towards diverting the milk selling point from Murang’a County Creameries (MCC) to privately owned firms.
“ There are instances the farmers have gone without money after those buying their milk go underground leaving the management committee without an option but to blame MCC for their failures,” said the governor.
