Murang’a county government marked the World Disability Day Persons with Disabilities as it stepped up strategies to uplift their living standards through distribution of devices.
Governor Irungu Kang’ata said his administration will remain focused on addressing the gaps to ensure the persons living with disabilities are attended to and supported.
Kang’ata spoke at Maragua Level Four Hospital when he launched the Department of Rehabilitation Services, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy Units aimed at improving access to specialized healthcare services for persons living with disabilities.

The units, he said, will offer services including disability management, splinting, sensory integration, functional rehabilitation, hand therapy, speech therapy, stroke and burns management, as well as developmental milestones facilitation.
“This initiative complements physiotherapy units already established at Kirwara, Kigumo and Muriranjas Hospitals to bring essential rehabilitation services closer to the people,” said the Governor.
The persons with disabilities benefited from free multidisciplinary services including occupational therapy, prosthetic limb support and disability assessment, with commitment to improving the quality, inclusivity and accessibility of healthcare services for all residents.
Kang’ata said assistive devices such as wheelchairs and white canes were also distributed based on individual needs.
During the function, EALA MP David Ole Sankok expressed displeasure over the attempt to remove much of the benefits enjoyed by the persons of the disabilities, with a call to the representatives of the persons with special needs in parliament to make a follow up.
Sankok said there were gains made for the persons with disabilities when he chaired the National Council for Persons Living with Disabilities should remain.

“ They should enjoy tax exemption when importing vehicles, the disability mainstreaming in the ministries ought to remain,” said Sankok.
Those present were Murang’a County First Lady Mary Kang’ata, Kajiado County First Lady Edna Lenku, Health officials led by CEC Dr. Fredrick Mbugua, and Chief Officer Eliud Maina among others.
