Mount Kenya University (MKU) is committed to supporting, developing and nurturing talents among the students through weekly entertainment,the Varsity Principal students’ and alumni affairs, Peter Waweru has said.
While speaking during the closing ceremony of the 5th MKU cultural week, Waweru disclosed that they have a very vibrant Office of Film, Creative and Performing Arts which is tasked with ensuring talents in all arts are supported.
He said the university had realised that students have abundant talents that ought to be exploited.

The Culture Week has been running in the University for the last five years and the climax is always the Beauty Pageant, which is a big crowd puller.
“We have a very well equipped gym where our students train every day and they are able to showcase their muscles in Mr. Flex Competition. We pride ourselves in award winning choirs and brass bands among others,” said Waweru who was the Chief Guest during the closing ceremony held at Thika Main Campus.

The Principal added, “This year’s Culture Week was a long awaited event by our students, especially those who joined the University in the year 2020 and 2021 as they have never experienced one. Participation in all activities was by all students. In fact, the winner of the Mr. MKU is a student from Congo. The results show that there is equal participation by all students without any preference. Miss MKU was won by a student in the School of Business.”
He thanked the Management for the support they give to their students during these activities, the Office of the Dean of Students and all the Associate Deans of Students (Nairobi, Parklands, Nakuru, Eldoret, Mombasa and Meru) for being able to organize this show stoppers events across all the campuses and concluding them successfully.

There were different categories that were being contested for, Mr. and Miss MKU, Miss MKU Plus size, Mr. MKU special needs. and Miss MKU Special needs, and Mr. MKU Flex.
All campuses in Nairobi, Parklands, Mombasa, Meru, Nakuru and Eldoret had the same contests being done concurrently.

The beauty pageant was a climax after a weeklong activities during the University’s Culture week.
Students showcased different talents, including rap battles, dead weight lifting, dancing competitions, spoken word, playing of different musical instruments and cultural dances and presentations by different communities including the international students.

It was a welcome break to the entire student’s fraternity after a period of 2 years when such an event was last conducted due to Covid-19 related challenges.
Congolese, Jaebet Mukela Twite, 24 , became the first foreign MKU student to win the coveted MR. MKU crown. The student studies Business Management at MKU Main Campus. The first runners up went to Tony Blair Onyango while Nixon Masinza settled for 2nd runners up.

The Miss MKU crown was won by Merly Sheila Awour, a Business Management student. Aiyan Abdi emerged the 1st runners up with Mary Mwangi from Journalism and Mass Communication department finishing in the 2nd runners up position.

The Culture week and the beauty pageants were held across all the campuses of the University at the same period, the Winner for Mr. title in MKU-Eldoret campus is Brian Kimutai from the Department of Management and the Winner Miss MKU Eldoret campus is Kong’a Agak from the department of enterprise Computing.
In Nairobi Campus the Mr. MKU Nairobi Campus title goes to Bradocks Onesmus from the department of Enterprise computing and the Miss MKU Nairobi Campus title goes toLisa Wanjiku from the department of social and Development studies.
From the Parklands law campus (PLC) the Mr. title goes to Newton Kiragu a law student and the Miss PLC goes Judy Chemitei and the Miss Plus PLC Achieng Elsie Sandra.From Nakuru campus the Mr. title was taken by Mark Lemaiyan Lenabaala from the department of journalism and mass communication while the miss titles goes to Rita Soila Lolkirik from the same department.
