Order to the law enforcers to erect roadblocks along the busy Nanyuki- Nyeri- Nairobi highway to arrest bhang smugglers have been affected.
The order by Central Regional Coordinator Wilfred Nyang’wanga in Maragua, Murang’a has been effected in the counties of Nyeri, Kirinyaga, and Kiambu in efforts to arrest the smugglers transporting bhang from the Ethiopian highlands through Moyale to Nairobi.
The RC ordered impromptu checks by the police following increased outcry as the schools students went on rampage.
Nyangw’anga said the route should be manned to ensure the culprits smuggling the bhang from Ethiopia to Nairobi are arrested and charged.
Speaking when he officially opened Kangangu Chief’s office in Maragua constituency, Murang’a, the RC blamed the bhang sneaking through Moyale was to blame over the unending unrest in secondary schools.
“The regional security committee will immediately ensure there are impromptu road checks in the region to arrest the culprits as he lauded police in Murang’a over the arrest of suspects and intercepting the bhang before it gets to the destination,” said Nyang’wanga.
He said there was a need for the management of learning institutions to work hand in hand with the security committees to ensure the bhang among other dangerous elements are not sneaked in.
“More so the schools should closely have a working relationship with nyumba kumi elders as they could play a big role in the information sharing in matters related to bhang trafficking,” he said.
He spoke in response to calls by Maragua MP Mary Wamaua who accused the traffic police of being on the highways while the bhang is being transported to the rural areas through public service means from Nairobi.
The police, she said, should not only check the condition of the vehicles but also conduct searches to ensure the bhang dealers are exposed and brought to book.
“Illicit brews and drugs are the major threat in Maragua and there should be a way to eliminate them,” said the lawmaker.
He lauded efforts made by police at Maragua and Saba Saba designed to weed out merchants behind bhang and illicit brews.
