The coffee market earned Sh 550.4 million after the auction of 12, 822 bags of coffee at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE).
At the market, the coffee buyers offered less coffee compared to that of last week’s auction of 14,767 bags.
The report from the NCE indicated that the coffee brokers offered 2,085 bags of grade AA, 2,395 bags of grade AB and 1,182 bags of grade C.
In the coffee brokers category, the report reflected that Kirinyaga Slopes 2,833 bags, New KPCU 2,394 , KCCE 2,325 bags, CEBBA 1,585 bags, Alliance Berries Limited 1,183 bags offered at the auction among others
In the market, 22 local and International buyers led by Ibero Kenya, Sasini, Louis Dreyfus, C.Dormans participated in the auction.
NCE CEO Lisper Ndung’u says in the auction Alliance Berries, Kirnyaga Slopes and CEBBA offered the largest consignment of certified coffee that attracted the buyers.
“As the peak season comes to an end we urge the farmers in the cooperatives and estates to continue selling their coffee through the auction,” said Ms Ndung’u.
Coffee value chain expert Henry Kinyua says five buyers bought 79 percent of the coffee offered at the auction, as Ibero Kenya managed 43.1 percent followed by Sasini 12.9 percent.
“Kenya’s coffee is in high demand, thus the need for the local farmers to increase production in the coming season,” said Kinyua.
