Low enrollment of students in technical institutes within Muranga County has forced the management to conduct door-to-door campaigns to increase their numbers.

Vocational training centres that were completed years ago and are yet to start their training courses include Gatanga, Maragua and Kandara.

It is a situation that has seen local leaders join forces with the institution in a bid to mobilize the youth to take up courses that will help them build their careers.

Kigumo MP Joseph Munyoro has been encouraging the youth to register in high numbers to benefit students at Muthithi Technical Institute located in the constituency.

Speaking at Mariira day and boarding primary school during a prayer day for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidates, Munyoro said there was a need for the youth to take advantage of the government-sponsored institutions instead of idling in the villages.

“I will sponsor the first 200 students to be registered at the institution when it opens in January. As a youth, you need to venture into marketable technical courses,” said Munyoro.

The school headteacher John Chege said it would be beneficial for the public to heed the leaders’ calls for enrollment, saying there was high demand for individuals with technical skills.

“There is a shortage of professionals with plumbing skills which are taught in the technical schools,” said Chege.

At the same time, he said the modern Kigumo Hospital is near completion as the contractor was awaiting the release of funds.

“We shall have a modern hospital which will be in operation by next year upon the assurance that the Sh340 million project will be completed within schedule,” said the MP.

The hospital was financed by the government following pleas made by the locals who have been travelling to Maragua to seek treatment.
