Parliamentary
committee on health will interrogate members of Kenya Medical Supplies
Authority (KEMSA) on how finances allocated to stop the spread of COVID-19 were
misappropriated.
The committee’s
chairperson Sabina Chege has said from the Ministry of Health
records, Kemsa was allocated Sh 2. 5 billion to facilitate the issuance
of cheap Personal Protection Equipment to medical facilities across the
country.
“ The board members have been summoned by the committee to
be interrogated how the billions of shillings were spent,” said Chege.
Last week, Kemsa board chairman Kembi Gitura
said three top officials at the organisation had been suspended to pave way for
investigations.
Speaking in Gitugi, Mathioya, she said that those found to have misappropriated any
funds will personally be held liable.
“Sh584 million was shared among committees
based on health index and also the devolved units have been receiving money
from donors. The health committee will get the records from the ministry of
health indicating what every county gets so that we can embark on
investigations,” she added.
The MP was accompanied
by Mathioya MP Peter Kimari during
launching on the construction of a bridge connecting Kangema and Mathioya Sub
counties.
Health facilities to be audited on utilisation
of funds are Kenyatta National Hospital,
Kenyatta University hospital and Moi Teaching and Referral hospital among others.
