Conversion of Kenol- Sagana-
Karatina- Marwa to a dual carriage highway is taking shape with contractors
working on diversions.
The Sh30 billion project being
implemented by Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is part of the
Northern Corridor designed to end in Isiolo by the year 2030.
The engineers working on the 84 kilometres
stretch cutting across counties of Murang’a, Embu, Kirinyaga and Nyeri are
working on final touches awaiting the launching of the project by President Uhuru
Kenyatta.
The Mountain Journal came across the
surveyors doing final touches between Sagana and Karatina marking where the diversions will pass through
to pave way for the construction of the much-awaited dual carriage highway.
High ranking government officials
led by Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary James Macharia and KeNHA
Director-General Eng Peter Mundinia have been visiting the project for
inspection ahead of launching.
The CS speaking in Murang’a said the
project is designed to increase connectivity in the Central region as well as
connecting with other parts of the country.
“The project is designed to take
three years and divided into three to enhance connectivity between Nairobi and the northern part of the country,” said the CS.
The second phase of the project will be from Marwa to Nanyuki, while the
third leg will end in Isiolo.
The section between Isiolo and
Marsabit has been tarmacked by KeNHA ending the transport challenges that the
Northern part has experienced since the country attained independence.
On the other side, the construction of Mau Mau
road designed to connect counties of Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri and Nyandarua have
started.
The Sh30 billion project will cover 500 kilometres
to connect areas along the Aberdare Ranges with Rift Valley and Eastern
regions.
