A project funded through the Murang’a Smart Cities programme has been launched and named after veteran politician Charles Rubia.
Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata launched the PCEA-Kayole Smart City Project in Murang’a Town and named it in honour of the late Charles Rubia, who made a significant contribution to the struggle for multiparty democracy in Kenya.
Kang’ata, accompanied by the Murang’a Town MCA Charles Machigo and other MCAs , said the project features an extensive tarmacked road that provides an alternative route through Murang’a Town, improving accessibility and connectivity.
Launching the project, he said the improved road is also expected to boost businesses in the area by making it easier for customers and traders to access the town while opening up new economic opportunities.
“The County Government remains committed to implementing projects and programmes that respond directly to the needs of Murang’a residents while creating opportunities for businesses, young people and the wider community,” said the governor..
The residents led by Jane Ngina celebrated the opening of the road, saying it had been abandoned for decades and that its new status will allow the traders with shops along the corridor to benefit.
Ngina lauded the efforts made by the county government to uplift the status of Murang’a County through opening areas that were perceived as closed.
“ In the old days, the road was neglected, but today Charles Rubia Road will attract more traders and help improve the local environment,” said Ngina.
The launch also provided a platform for young people to showcase their talents through skating and dancing competitions, where the winners were awarded cash prizes.
