Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) is set to host the inaugural Mt Kenya Mountain Run on Sunday, 7 September 2025, as part of a broader campaign to promote environmental conservation, education, and youth empowerment through sport.
Held under the theme “Conquering the Mountain for Education and Environmental Conservation,” the event will take place at the university’s scenic Marimba Campus, located on the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya. It is being organised in collaboration with Athletics Kenya and the Kenya Tourism Board.
Organisers say the run seeks to combine physical fitness with environmental and community awareness, making it more than just a sporting event. The programme will feature multiple race categories to accommodate elite athletes, students, children, and the general public.
The top ten finishers in each category will receive medals and prizes, recognising excellence, endurance, and community spirit.
A university spokesperson explained that the event is part of a strategic initiative to harness the power of sports as a vehicle for sustainable development, youth mentorship, and community engagement. “We believe in developing the whole person, and this run reflects our mission to shape responsible citizens who care about their environment and fellow Kenyans,” the spokesperson said.
In addition to promoting wellness and environmental stewardship, proceeds from the event will go towards supporting financially disadvantaged students, helping them access university education.
“By registering or participating in this run, you’re not only running for your own health—you’re running to help a student achieve their dream,” the spokesperson added.
