The Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE) this week auctioned 2,092,764 kilograms of coffee earning the farmers in cooperatives and estates Sh1.9 billion.
Nyeri based Kiundu factory affiliated to Mutheka cooperative society attained the highest price of Sh57,494 per bag of Grade AA, brokered by the Alliance Berries Limited.
Other factories that achieved prices for Grade AA were Mahiga Sh 55,556, Kamachungwa Sh55,168, Embu Based Mbiu Njeru coffee factory Sh56,977 among others.
NCE CEO Lisper Ndung’u urged the farmers to continue selling their coffee through the auction that offers competitive prices.
In the auction, she said, the coffee brokers presented 5,283 bags of grade AA and 10,109 bags of grade AB.
“The buyers are interested in quality coffee, thus the need for the farmers to produce more to satisfy the local and international markets,” said Ms Ndung’u.
In the market analysis, Ibero Kenya emerged the major purchaser, followed byLouis Dreyfus Company, C Dormans, Kenyacof Limited, and Sasini (K) Limited.
In the brokers category, in the NCE ranking, Alliance Berries Limited auctioned 12,899 bags weighing 787,808 kg, the highest volume traded.
Others were Minnesota Coffee Marketers 253,751 kg, Kirinyaga Slopes Coffee Brokerage Company Ltd: 343,843 kg, New Kenya Planters Cooperative Union PLC: 227,109 kg, and KCCE Marketing Agency Limited 158,582 kg.
