Nine coffee brokers presented 9,017 bags of coffee traded  at  Sh 429.9 million at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE).

In the auction, grade AA brokered by the Alliance Berries  Limited from Gitura and Munani factories achieved the highest price of  Sh 45,103.

Grade AB, Makiou factory brokered by CEBBL  achieved  the highest price of Sh42,148 for each of the 100 bags presented at the auction.

NCE Chief Executive Officer Lisper Ndung’u said in the market there were 10 coffee buyers  compared to 14 in the previous weekly auction.

Ms Ndung’u asked the farmers in the cooperatives and estates to deliver their coffee at the auction for competitive prices.

“ The auction has provided an attractive payment to the farmers  in the last one year. There is demand  for Kenya’s thus need for the farmers to increase production,” said Ndung’u.

Kigumo MP Joseph Munyoro says there is a need for the growers in the counties to concentrate on addressing  the production  of the quality coffee required in the international market.

“ Kenya’s coffee is in high demand to blend the produce from other countries owing to its unique taste,” said Munyoro, also a member of Cotepa.

Joseph Kamande, a coffee farmer in Maragua appreciates  the transformation of the coffee market pleading with the AFA to register more agents in the direct sale category.

“ Farmers need the freedom to sell their produce away from the auction,” said Kamande.
