Farmers Party chairman Irungu Nyakera made a familiarisation tour of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) days after he was appointed by President William Ruto.
During the tour, he was met by KICC Chief Executive Officer Mr James Mwaura who they discussed the the strategy of KICC to promote Kenya’s conference tourism capacity. This will include the optimization of KICC’s potential for business events, which is one of the fastest-growing tourism subsectors globally, complementing traditional tourism strongholds such as beaches and wildlife.
Nyakera affirmed his commitment to support the growth and turnaround of KICC strategy, making it a premier tourism destination and rivalling other regional powerhouses in Meetings.
Nyakera who was moved to KICC from Kemsa said he was dedicated to working with the KICC board of directors and helping in the development of cities to develop their conference tourism potential and positively contribute to the growth of Kenya’s economy.
“Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism and rivalling other regional destinations, including Kigali, Rwanda, and Cape Town, South Africa,” said Nyakera.
The Annual Tourism Sector Performance Report 2023 showed that 24% of Kenya’s international visitors came to Kenya for tourism and conferences, affirming the critical input of conferences to Kenya’s tourism output.
