Youth competing for space in the innovation

As the world celebrates International Youth Day today, hundreds of youth are competing in the innovation space, as they put their expertise into practice.

Across  the country, 16.5 million youth are focused on self employment based on their areas of expertise, while others are pursuing short courses in colleges.

In Murang’a 360 Climate Institutes organised a talent show where the youth  demonstrated their experience in various courses.

The institute located in Gikoe village in  Mathioya, brought together 300 youth  to showcase their talents in agriculture, electricity, cooking, beauty , woodwork, masonry among other courses.

 According to the head of programmes at the institute, Mr Daniel Irungu the youth are full of ideas and thus need to be guided on the best ways to utilise them. 

The facility was opened a year ago with the lessons conducted in the morning and afternoon.

“Eleven courses are taught at the institution where the learners pay the registration fee of Sh1,000 with the lesson packages being catered for,” said Irungu. 

The institute was established by professionals from the village led by Ms Hannah Muriithi, based on the need for bringing back to the community through molding the youth opened with 34 youth.*

 Antony Kuruma, a resident of Gatanga said the youth are interested in the future seeking  for space and resources  to demonstrate their ability.

“ The youth are spread in various sectors of the economy and only they are denied a chance to demonstrate their experience,” said Kuruma.

Governor Irungu Kang’ata said he launched Murang’a Youth Service (MYS) to help the selected groups in the wards acquire skills  for the future.

Kang’ata told a youth workshop at Murang’a University of Technology (MUT) of the need for partnership and collaboration with the National Government and other non-state actors to enhance the promotion of Digital

“ The youth are focused on digital solutions and innovations at the global and national levels that contribute to sustainable development. Promote youth innovations and enterprises by providing a digital,” said Kang’ata.

Secretary Administration at Ministry of Youth Affairs and Creative Economy Mr Allan Macharia, said  there was need for the engagement to accelerate efforts towards achieving SDGs, including the role of young people in advancing digital transition.

“Promote youth innovations and enterprises by providing a digital marketplace, and create awareness of opportunities in the different economies to create awareness of opportunities,,” said Macharia.
