Young leaders taking control of a major water company in Murang’a

In a move that achieves the growing influence of young leaders in vital sectors, Eng. John Macharia Wanjiku  a go-getter, people oriented, future-focused, sober, who always understands the subject of context has been Newly Appointed as the Managing Director of Murang’a South Water and Sanitation Company (Muswasco). 

This appointment, endorsed by Governor Irungu Kang’ata of Murang’a County, marks a significant shift towards entrusting key responsibilities to the younger generation.


Eng. Macharia  is registered with Engineering Board of Kenya (EBK) whose trajectory is Emblematic of perseverance, Expertise, and a Deep-rooted commitment to advancing Water Engineering solutions.  Graduating with Honors in Water Engineering from Egerton University, he embarked on a remarkable journey that intertwined Academic Prowess with real-world experience as his tenure at Muswasco, commenced in 2013 as an Intern, bore witness through  his Hard work, Creativity, and Innovative approach, culminating in his role as Technical Service Manager in 2017. 

During his tenure as Technical Service Manager, Eng. Macharia spearheaded transformative water projects that have had a tangible impact on communities within Murang’a south that is; Designing and Supervision of  Maragua Bulk Water Project, a flagship initiative that now serves over 2,000 households, Kandara Kenol mainline water has significantly enhanced water access in Kenol Municipal, benefiting over 5,000 Households, also designing Mariira- Kamahuha pipeline  presently serving over 2,500 households just to mention the list is endless.


Behind every successful person is a mentor who believes in them first. Thank you outgoing Managing Director Mary Nyaga for being that person, leaving behind a Legacy of Resilience, Mentorship, and Corporate excellence. Her  leadership, characterized by a Lioness-like determination by absorbing shocks from all corners, paving the way for the seamless transition to Mentee . 

Also the Board of Directors, Chaired by the Selfless and Ambitious Madam Nancy Muhoro, has also played a pivotal role in steering Muswasco towards fulfilling its missions. 

The collective efforts have seen a substantial reduction in Non-Revenue Water(N.R.W) from 85% to 45%, Increase in water coverage from 30% to 65% over the period,  Resource Mobilization for projects implementation spanning to over 5Billion including Kenol Project, Kangari water project, Kandara Bulk Water project and Kinyona Mareira Bulk water project etc .

Thanks to Governor Irungu Kang’ata for believing in Young leadership, embracing Inclusive governance and relentless effort to make everyone feels friction of  devolution, this not only signals Confidence, in young leadership but also achieves the importance of Grooming, Entrusting responsibilities to the next generation of leaders and sets new standard for effective governance.

As Eng. Macharia assumes his New role, the stage is set for Continued growth, Innovation, and smooth Service delivery at Muswasco. His appointment serves as a beacon of hope for young professionals, reaffirming that the future belongs to those who believe in the Power of Dreams and are prepared to turn Opportunities into Reality.
