The Mountain Journal A coffee factory in Mathira, Nyeri clocked Sh 3,654,020 after selling 42 bags of grade AA.Farmers affiliated with Gachathaini factory, Gikanda Farmers Cooperative in Nyeri County will be smiling to the bank following the impressive payment for their premier coffee grades that were sold at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE) on Tuesday.The premier grades were bought by Ibero Kenya with a 50 Kgs bag going for Sh87,000($600).The auction at Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE) earned farmers Sh969,876,058 from the sale of 22,360 bags.
An average price of a bag traded at Sh35,380($244). Gachathaini factory sold the commodity through Alliance Berries Limited.In the analysis 69 percent of the volumes traded 15,358 bags, were grade AA and AB.NCE Acting CEO Ms. Risper Ndung’u said the sale was impressive, with Gachathaini fetching the best prices for their AA grades.“In the sale, Kirinyaga Slopes 6,382 bags made Sh294,086,578.5, as the Alliance Berries Limited netted 217,765,799 for 4,236 bags,” said the CEO. Coffee trading expert Mr Henry Kinyua said the coffee attracted the best prices owing to the presence of multiple buyers in the market.Gichathaini farmers, he said achieved a price equivalent to Sh269 per kilogramme of cherry.
“In the market, coffee from the counties of Nyeri, Murang’a, Embu, and Kirinyaga where the factories emerged as the 10 top best in the auction platform”, said Kinyua.NKPCU, sold coffee 3,917 bags taking home Sh155,218,933.In the dealers’ platform, the best five are Kenya Coff bought 7,315 bags, C-Dormans 3,702 bags, Ibero Kenya 4,028, Louis Dreyfus 2,699 bags, and Sasini Kenya 1,523 bags. The 24 dealers bought the premier grades of AA 4,584 bags, AB 10,774 bags, and C 4,087 bags.Other marketing agents who participated in the sale were, Bungoma sold 388 bags, KCCE 1,896 bags, Kinya 2,455 bags,Kipkelion 1,085 bags, Meru County 1,043 bags, and United Eastern 958 bags. www.themountainjournal.co.ke
