Two churches that were set to be demolished at Makeji market to pave way for construction of government sponsored affordable houses will remain on their land. The churches which were partly demolished by the constructor, met strong resistance from Murang’a governor Irungu Kang’ata following an uproar from the community and the faithful. Government officials visited the Sh92 million project site, last week where nine blocks will be constructed. Ng’araria MCA Bishop Simon Wamwea said an agreement was reached to leave the churches operate as they have been. “The constructor pushed his fence away from the area reserved for the worship centres, in respect to the agreement entered by the players,” said Wamwea. Kandara Deputy County Commissioner Peter Maina and affordable housing director Gakuru Muchiri inspected the foundation works of the project designed for 220 housing units. The project site manager Eng. Stephen Mwendwa said on the two and half acres of land, they have designed to construct 220 housing units, that will include bed sitters, one bedroomed, two bedroomed and three bedroomed. “On preparation of the project excavation foundation, the works is at 90 percent complete,” said Mwendwa. Gakuru Muchiri said the project has transformed the youths and more will be engaged. www.themountainjournal.co.ke
