The Nairobi Coffee
Exchange this week raised Sh708 million from the sale of 20,199 bags of coffee sourced
from 877 cooperatives and estates.
In the same period last year, the auction had
8985 bags of the commodity.
Sale
No 9, attracted 18 international buyers, where Alliance Berries Limited delivered 5,508
bags that traded at Sh191 million.
NKPCU delivered 5,234 bags
that were sold at Sh184 million.
Kirinyaga Slopes entered
the market for the first time on Wednesday presenting 2,442 bags that garnered
Sh87.5 million.
In
the category of AA, 3,048 bags raised $851,161.68, AB 7,447 bags for $1,706,639.70
and C 6,474 bags that raised $1,429,413.70.
The
privately owned Alliance Berries Limited brought the coffee from 210
cooperatives and estates, while NKPCU from 194 entities.

Coffee Producer Association Chairman Peter Gikonyo appreciated the increased
deliveries in the market from the farming community.
Gikonyo
who is also the chairman of the NCE said the activities at the auction platform
were stable five months after they resumed through the implementation of the
Coffee General Regulation 2019.
“We
hope for better returns to farmers and hope the market will continue performing
for the interest of the growers,” said Gikonyo.
Coffee
and Tea Parliamentary Group member Joseph Munyoro said the performance has been encouraging, calling on
the farmers to take their commodity to the
market.
Munyoro, also the Kigumo MP, said he was
appreciative that hundreds of the cooperative societies sell their coffee at
the NCE.
“From
January we hope there will be more activities thus need more international
buyers eying for our coffee,” said
the lawmaker.
Other
brokerage firms that participated in the market are Kipkelion which earned $405,843 for 1,783
bags, Kinya $259,999 for 1,212 bags, and KCCE $339,591 for 1,491 bags.
Others
were Meru County which delivered 444 bags of coffee taking home $92,805, Mt.
Elgon 1,281 bags for $304,261 and United Eastern 516 bags for $141,404.
