Murang’a County Government has disbursed more than Sh140 million to support needy students proceed with their secondary education.
The 19,000 learners received the support from Governor Irungu Kang’ata as promised during his inauguration ceremony.
In a ceremony attended by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Kang’ata said he will continue with the 3,000 students under Nyota Zetu Scholarship initiated by his predecessor Mwangi wa Iria.
The Deputy President said educating the children was noble as he donated Sh1 million to support Governor Kang’ata initiative.
Kang’ata has said he has expanded the Nyota Zetu initiative to include more students thus increasing professionals.
In a move likely to phase out Nyota Zetu programme, he said, the resources used to cater for the boarding of the learners could be diverted to benefit a large number of the needy students in day schools.
“Karega, Muthithi, Mukangu and Ndaka ini secondary schools are champions as they have been sending a high number of students to the university yet they are day schools,” said the governor.
Nyota Zetu initiative benefitted 1,000 students from the needy background annually , with the selection done by the village leaders, churches and chiefs.
In the new administration, the 35 elected MCAs got an allocation of a million shillings for the purpose of paying education for the needy students.
During the function, Technology Primary school got a trophy for being the best school in KCPE 2022. Mariira Day and Boarding Primary School in Kigumo was also rewarded for being the best in Kigumo.
Present were MPs Edward Muriu( Gatanga) Joseph Munyoro( Kigumo) and Mary Wamaua( Maragua).
