New cards to register persons living with disabilities have been introduced, upon discovery that undeserving individuals have been enrolled and getting benefits.
National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) Chairperson Dr Joyce Mutinda said a new registration form has been introduced to guide the registration process designed to kick out the rogue beneficiaries.
She spoke in Murang’a during a sensitization meeting with the leadership at the county government led by Deputy Governor Stephen Munania and CECs James Gatuna (ICT) and Dr Winnie Mwangi (Lands).
The commission has kicked off sensitization meetings with persons with disabilities on the new guidelines on registration requirements for residents in the counties of Murang’a, Nyeri, and Kiambu at Murang’a Teachers Training College.
The first meeting was held at Murang’a Teachers Training College with PWDs from Murang’a, Kiambu, and Nyeri attended.
Other meetings are planned in Coast, Rift Valley, and Nyanza regions facilitated by Ford Foundation.
Mutinda said the new registration form is foolproof and will lock out the undeserving persons as assessment will be done at the public health facilities by a panel of medical experts.
“We have teamed up with the National Council for Persons Living with Disabilities to launch the new registration guidelines to eliminate cases of fraud,” said the chairperson.
The team hinted there are some civil servants who have corruptly obtained PWD cards, to extend their service up to 60 years of age purporting they suffer from disabilities.
There are also businessmen who have obtained the PWD cards corruptly in a strategy to stop paying taxes on the importation of goods and access public and private tender contracts. www.themountainjournal.co.ke
