Ray of hope to end water scarcity in Nairobi, as tunnel project near completion

The project is 97 percent complete with contractor doing final touches, and test runs

The Jubilee Government ambitious project to deliver sufficient water to Nairobi and the nearby satellite town is getting close.

Seven years ago, the government allocated billions of shillings to end the scarcity of the commodity among the city dwellers in line with promoting the economy and health of the citizens.

 Acting Water Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said the Northern Water Collector Tunnel (NWCT) is set to be completed in July as the Athi Water Development Work Agency is conducting a test run of the Sh8.2 billion project.

 Macharia said Nairobi suffered a daily water supply deficit of 260million cubic metres  with a demand of 810million cubic metres, as the NWCT will inject a production of 140 million cubic metres.

“ We have a supply of 560million cubic metres of water thus the need for the government to source  for the additional to meet the demand  as the Nairobi controls 50 percent of the country’s GDP,” said the CS during the inspection of the multi billion shillings project.

The projects funded by World Bank will fetch water from three major rivers Gikigie, Irati and Maragua all originating from Aberdare Forest.

Backed by Athi Water CEO Eng Thuita Mwangi, Macharia also in charge of Transport and Infrastructure said the challenges that blocked the timely completion of the project among them land compensation and administrative issues with contractors have been resolved.
