Governor Nyoro grants bar operators a license fee waiver

 Waiver on condition  they adhere to the rule of the law

General retail, bar and restaurant and hotel alcoholic drink licenses have been granted 20 percent waiver of their licenses by Kiambu County Government. The good news was announced by  Governor Dr. James Nyoro during a meeting of alcohol traders association officials for the 12 sub- counties of the county which was held in Kiambu yesterday. The move follows a spirited campaign by the officials.

Dr. Nyoro said he had taken the initiative to cushion the traders from the adverse effect occasioned by covid – 19 pandemic. The governor said his government would continue to create a conducive environment for business to thrive in the county. He said the waiver was an incentive to alcohol trade in the area.

He urged the traders to adhere to covid – 19 protocols as Kenyans braced themselves to live the covid – 19.

Apart from the above waiver, all other alcoholic drinks licenses would be paid in full.

Following the waiver, general  retail alcoholic drink license holders operating in town will pay Sh. 48,000 down from Sh 60,000 while the one in urban areas will pay Sh 32,000 down from 40,000. Others will pay Sh 19,200 instead of Sh 24,000.

Bar and restaurant in town which would have paid Sh 100,000 will pay Sh 80,000 while those in urban areas which would have coughed Sh 80,000 will now pay Sh 64,000 others will pay Kshs 48,000 down from SH 60,000.

The hotel alcoholic drink license will cost SH 121,600 down from 152,000. Members Club alcoholic drink license will cost Sh 128,000 while supermarket or retail chain stores alcoholic drink license will cost Sh 156,000.

The director of alcohol in the county Michael Kang’ethe urged the traders to reciprocate the good gesture by the government by paying their licenses promptly.

Mr Kangethe said no inspection of premises for those seeking renewal of licenses except those with complaints, public health issues of security concern As new outlets will be subjected to inspection.

He said his directorate will allocate each ward a day to review new applications of bars and those with the above concerns. He said those without issues should start paying immediately.

 Kang’ethe said reported cases of extortion by licensing officers would be firmly dealt with individually.

Juja Sub-County Alcoholic Traders Association Chairman William Muiko thanked the governor for his timely waiver gesture. He urged members to be fully compliant with the law.
