Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA)has funded construction of more than 2,774 kilometres in the last two years.
In the duration, the road agency did the 2,774 kilometres of road in 23 counties at the tune of Sh63 billion.
The remarkable projects include Malindi-Kakoneni- Sala Gate- Marikebuni road that covered 113.4 kilometres in Kilifi County, at Sh4,530,765,586.
In the duration the Kilifi project is ranked as the longest and increased connectivity in the Coastal region.
Mbombo- Makuyu- Ithanga- Gaiti Iguru road in Murang’a
Imaroro-Mashru-Isara of 70 kilometres located in Kajiado County that spent Sh3,037,646,796 was the second longest corridor tarmacked.
KeRRA Director General Eng Philomen Kandie said in the financial year 2018/2019, they managed to do 1,358 kilometres.
According to the financial year 2019/2020 report, the agency facilitated construction of 925 kilometres of road.
Within the period under review, counties of Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Nyeri, Embu, Murang’a and Nyandarua benefitted with projects valued at Sh15 Billion.
“In the first quarters of the financial year 2020/2021 the authority funded construction of 491.56 kilometres,” said the director general.
In Murang’a county, Gati-Iguru- Ithanga- Makuyu-Kamahuha- Mbombo of 61 kilometres was done by a Chinese Construction firm, and connected the lower parts of Maragua and Gatanga constituencies that had been neglected for decades.
Gatanga MP Nduati Ngugi said improvement of roads in the last two years has accelerated development in many parts of the country, as the Jubilee Government pledged in 2013 campaigns.
Murang’a county, he said, has benefited a lot with increased business opportunities, and transportation of farm produce to the markets.
Gati Iguru- Mbombo road, Eng Nduati said, has opened the interior parts of Murang’a, linking the Central region with the highway heading to Northern Kenya through Garissa.
” There is a need for allocation of more resources to KeRRA that has a huge responsibility to open the rural parts of the country,” said Nduati during inspection of construction of roads in his constituency.
Other roads done in the Central Kenya region are Rumuruti- Sipili- Ndindika in Laikipia county covering 42 kilometers at a cost of ShSh2.1 billion.
Other roads in Murang’a county are Gatanga- Mbugiti-Kagaria loop Sh942 million of 23 kilometres, and Murang’a Town- Huhi- Kayuyu that covered 20 kilometres at a cost of Sh1 billion.
Other road agencies are Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA).
