MURANG’A:Sewer row between Muranga High School and neighbours

A
section of St Mary Village in Murang’a is stinking following blockage of a
sewer line following a dispute between a secondary school and a service
provider.

The
dispute between Murang’a High School and Murang’a Water and Sanitation Company (Muwasco)
led to the blockage of a sewer line thus exposing residents to threat of water
borne related diseases.

Over
70 families in the locality have been exposed to the challenges in the past
five months, after the management of the school ordered blockage of a pipe
alleged to had been sneaked into the institutional sewer line.

Beth
Wangari and Bernard Mugambi blamed the schools for the blockage of the line that
was constructed through the support of Murang’a County Government five years
ago.

“We
have the problem with waste water and we call upon the government to intervene
on our behalf, as our children are at risk of contracting diseases,” said Mugambi.

But
Chairman of Parents Association at the school Captain Amos Njoroge
blamed the mess on Muwasco, saying it failed
to construct an independent line, instead of interfering with
 school’s line.

“ The school had to block the line
after our bio digester that was done through support of Upper Tana  at Sh4.5 million could not function,” said  Njoroge.

Muwasco Managing Director Eng Daniel Ng’ang’a said
the school had no authority to block the line as it was done by the government to
the rescue of the residents.

“ Since the school is a public
institution the infrastructure can be passed through it, as it has been done
in other parts of the company,” said Ng’ang’a.
