Directors
of tea factories have been invited to deliberate on how much the growers will
be paid for their annual bonus.
The meetings for the directors from the 69
factories held between September 23 and September 29 to come out with payment
for the 680,000 growers.
Annually the bonus payment is released to the
growers at the end of October as it has been the tradition.
In
the communication to the directors, Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) has
asked the directors to be conversant with statement of the accounts for the
last 12 months (between July 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020).
The payment will be made in respect to the green
leaf production per farmer.
In an earlier communication to the directors,
this financial year the turnover in the sector is Sh79 billion.
This
is an increased by Sh10 billion compared to that of last year.
In
the financial year 2018/2019,the turnover in the tea sector was Sh69 billion , where farmers were paid Sh46 billion for their green leaf delivered for processing.
The directors head to deliberate on the
payment of bonus when the government backed reforms in the tea sector are being
implemented.
Agriculture
Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya gazetted the regulations saying the government
was interested to bail out the farmers from sector that is monopolized by the
agency.
Director General Anthony Muriithi last month released a timeline on how the
regulations will be implemented to enable control of the sector.
The farmers meeting chaired by Munya
have been held in Meru, Murang’a and Nyeri.
