Murang’a County Government issued bursaries under Inua Masomo Bursary programme to 2,500 learners, in a programme that targets top 10 students in every day secondary school across the county.
Also the more than 300 students who went to day secondary schools and attained a C+ and above received a Sh 10,000 each to support their transition to university and college.
Governor Irungu Kang’ata speaking during the event, acknowledged his administration’s commitment that would ensure no deserving student is denied an opportunity to pursue higher education due to financial constraints.
“We have listened to testimonies of the students who went through the days schools that the bursary supported them to completion of the secondary school studies,” said Kang’ata.
In the event, 750 MYS enrolled youths graduated bringing them to a total of 9,450 youths who have gone through the process since its inception.
“After months of community service and technical training in Vocational Training Centres, the graduates will receive Sh15,000 seed capital each to acquire tools and business start ups,” he said.
He directed that the businesses that will be established by the graduates will also enjoy exemption from county taxes, giving them a head start into entrepreneurship.
The MYS programme recruits the young through a transparent balloting process, engaging them in three months of community service, where they earn Sh400 per day, with Sh300 paid directly to the participants and Sh100 to their parents or guardians. They are then enrolled in vocational training before graduating with practical skills for employment and self-reliance.
The County also recognised and awarded the top 10 Grade 10 students from Murang’a day secondary schools for their outstanding academic performance, underscoring its commitment to rewarding excellence and motivating learners to aim higher.
Murang’a Education Day brought together students, parents, teachers and education stakeholders to celebrate achievement while showcasing the County Government’s continued investment in education, skills development and youth empowerment.
Through initiatives such as Inua Masomo and the Murang’a Youth Service, the County Government continues to build an educated, skilled and economically empowered generation, reinforcing its belief that investing in young people is the surest path to the county’s long-term prosperity.
