For many women in Kibra, football tournaments continue to offer a platform for them to sharpen and use their skills even after quitting competitive sports after childbirth.
One of such women is 24-year-old goal keeper Nancy Njeri who once played in the National Women Super League (NWSL) said balancing football and motherhood is a challenge especially for women from low-income households.
“Football is still my dream, being a mother has changed many things but I still want to play professional football.” She said
“Taking part in this competition keeps the dream alive for many young women who have taken a break from football.” she added.
Njeri who is also a licensed coach noted that her team Young Mothers was started by some of the players who quit football after getting pregnant.
Njeri is a trained plumber and she also offers catering services to raise money as she raises her young child with the help of her mother.
Njeri who has also played in the Kenya women premier league (KWPL) keeps her dream of playing for international teams alive.
On behalf of other participants she expressed appreciation for the opportunity to interact, showcase their talents, and strengthen unity among women and girls in the community.
For many women like Njeri, these soccer tournaments organised by Path to Russia offer a lifeline and much needed hope, keeping many dreams alive.
