Thousands of community leaders gather in Nanyuki to deliberate on community lands

Registration of community
land in 24 counties is set to be marked in a process designed to restore harmony.
The registration of
the community land majority occupied by the pastoralists comes five years after
the Community Land Act 2016 was enacted.
Lands and Physical Planning
Chief Administrative Secretary Mr Alex Mburi said that the department was
working closely with other stakeholders among them the county governments to ensure
the community lands were issued with title deeds.
The concept to issue
land ownership documents, he said, is designed to bring to an end the conflicts experienced
in the pastoral communities over grazing land.
“We want to make
sure that the community lands in the 24 counties are issued with title deeds by
the year 2024,” said the Ministry of Lands Official.
The forum was
organised by IMPACT Kenya organisation and the National Lands Commission.
He regretted that most
of the conflicts being experienced in some parts of Laikipia, Samburu, Isiolo
and Baringo were due to conflict over land.
“We want to bring
this problem to an end once and for all by allocating these communities title
deeds,” said Mburi.
The process to issue
the land ownership documents will be fast tracked as hundreds of the lands
officers will be deployed in the counties.
Mburi addressed hundreds
of community representatives from the 24
counties deliberating on way to
implement the Community Lands Act 2016.
Laikipia Deputy Governor
John Mwaniki, his Samburu counterpart Julius Leseto and Laikipia North MP Sarah
Lekorere were present.
“For the areas to
develop, they have to be issued with title deeds. We want all the government
bodies to come together and solve this issue once and for all. Those who have
already been registered are leaping huge benefits from their land since they
are allowed to lease it to investors” noted Korere.
IMPACT Kenya
organisation Program Manager John Tingoi called for the need to empower people
in the affected counties with information on how the law applies.
“Most of these people are yet to understand about
the law, and how they will register their community land. They need to be empowered with
information and that is why we have organized this forum” he said.
