The celebrated Smart City initiative that has transformed rural markets in Murang’a has been recognised by the town planners.

The two year old initiative spearheaded by the county government was described as the enya’s top-performing devolved units and Governor Irungu Kang’ata received the County and Towns Excellence Award 2025 in recognition of his administration’s Smart City Programme

The award was presented during the Smart Cities Forum 2025, jointly organized by the Town and County Planners Association of Kenya and the Nation Media Group in a two days event attended by planners, policymakers, and innovators.

In the forum the discussion was on urban sustainability, digital transformation, and climate-resilient infrastructure for Kenya’s counties.

The governor said the Smart City Programme has rolled out a wide range of projects including tarmacking and cabro paving of key access roads.

“ We have constructed modern drainage systems, installation of solar-powered streetlights, and beautification of market centers,” said the Governor as he appreciated the award.

He added that the programme has awakened the once sleepy markets through the infrastructural upgrades that have made rural towns more accessible, stimulated trade, and improved the overall quality of life for residents.

“ Some of the centers that benefitted from the programme are Kangari, Kiria ini, and Kanyenyaini that were not accessible and which today benefitted from the modern urban planning,” he said.
