Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader and 2022 presidential aspirant, Alfred Mutua has called for overhaul of the national energy sector and in particular demonopolization of Kenya Power as the sole distributor of electricity in the country.
Dr Mutua said monopoly of the power parastatal in the country for many years had resulted to inefficiency, poor service delivery and massive corruption.
Reacting to concerns raised by residents of Kianjai market in Meru county during his second day of people listening tour of Mt Kenya region, Mutua urged President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration to provide an environment for multiple power generating companies to operate.
“Kenya has become a country of frequent power outages. Kenya Power has been operating in monopoly since independence. We must learn from developed countries which have liberalized the power generation sector,” Dr Mutua said.
The Machakos Governor said the monopoly by Kenya Power will not allow for efficiency and effectiveness to thrive.
“For businesses and households to enjoy reliable electricity supply, diversity is critical. If the current Government fails to effect it, once elected President in 2022 I’ll sign an executive order to pave way for many power companies to operate in the country,” Dr Mutua said
