Tea farmers earns Sh767 million in the weekly auction

The weekly tea auction generated Sh767.5 million after the sale of 2.058 million kgs of made tea.

In the sale dated September 23, Momul Factory achieved the highest price of Sh27 million.

 Factories in the east of the rift sold 1.4 million kgs, while those from the west of the rift marketed  635,707 kgs earning Sh572.2 million  and Sh 195.3 million respectively.  

In the Mombasa weekly auction the 10 factories that achieved the highest prices  were Githongo Sh21,383,987, Ngere Sh25,427,225, Githambo Sh20,893,593, Makomboki Sh20,461,056, Ikumbi Sh19,879,756, Ndima Sh19,739,443, Chinga19,630,131, Kagwe Sh18,836,480,and Rukiriri Sh19,255,500.

KTDA Holding Chairman Enos Njeru said the farmers are encouraged to pluck quality green leaves in efforts to sustain the local and international market.  

Mr Njeru said in the sale factories from the east acquired Sh572,261,494 while the west got Sh 195,312,483.

 Njeru said all the factories are under instruction to encourage their growers to pluck quality green leaves.

“ As KTDA we have imported tonnes of fertilisers to ensure we have high quality green leaves targeting impressive prices in the future,” said Njeru.

Ngere Factory director James Githinji said the farmers are under obligation to produce the quality green leaves.

“The buying centre committees are instructions to ensure the growers pluck the quality green leaves. The quality  will not be compromised as we have to sustain the existing quality,” said Githinji.
