Coffee sale has earned farmers Sh448.3 million for 10,372 bags of the commodity in Tuesday’s trading at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE).
The stock delivered by six brokerage firms had been sourced from 399 estates and cooperatives, with NKPCU delivering 4,778 bags and the privately owned Alliance Berries Limited 2,823 bags.
In the market analysis, NKPCU delivery fetched $997,338.94 (Sh152,941,926.4) and Alliance Berries Limited $ 613,684.26 ( Sh94,108,481.2).
In the provision of grades, AA of 1,249 bags fetched $ 345,604.68, AB 3,495 $ 807,310.94, and C of 3,549 bags garnered $ 759,827.20
Coffee and Tea Parliamentary Group (COTEPA) members, MPs Joseph Munyoro( Kigumo) and Peter Kihungi( Kangema) said the NCE trading has helped the farmers understand the coffee business.
They said there was a need for the growers to increase production to satisfy the growing market for the Kenyans coffee.
Farmers, Munyoro said, should take advantage of the coffee auction as they explore the opportunities through increased production.
“I appreciate societies from Murang’a, that include New Irati, Kangunu, Kanguya, Thanga ini Kangiri, Thika Giki cooperatives societies for the delivery of coffee to the auction,” said Munyoro.
Kenya Coffee Producer Association Peter Gikonyo said more farmers in the cooperatives and estates are delivering their produce through the licensed brokerage firms.
“ NCE appreciates the role played by the brokerage firms in visiting the farmers in the villages and assisting in the transportation of the commodity to the warehouses,” said Gikonyo.
The brokerages firms’ performance in the NCE, KCCE 1,242 bags $ 246,468.04, Kinya 518 bags $115,023.46, Kipkelion 758 bags $171,815.14 and United Eastern 253 bags $53,753.22
Last week’s sale netted Sh394 million for 12,325 bags of coffee.
