Murang’a rural shopping centres are set for a major rehabilitation and tarmacking of the roads in efforts to make them condusive for business.
Using millions of shillings collected, the county government has identified major market centres to benefit from the smart Cities programme where they have the roads upgraded to bitumen standard and have proper drainage systems.

Launching the Smart Cities Programme, Governor Irungu Kang’ata said his administration will be using the local revenue to spur development focusing at attracting investors.
In the first phase, the county government has selected Kabiati, Kangari and Kiria ini markets to undergo rehabilitation, after years of neglect despite their existing potential in generating local revenue.

“Murang’a County Government has embarked on giving old market centres a face lift in efforts to beautify them to attract investors for the purpose of promoting businesses and spurring growth,” said Kang’ata.
The governor added that the business opportunities in Kangari will increase following establishment of Murang’a University of Technology (MUT), establishing a school of agriculture at Mariira Agriculture Training Centre.
Kangari MCA Moses Mirara said upgrading of Kangari market was a dream come true as the locals have braved congestion apart from being used to operating in the mud during the rainy days.

” Kangari was upgraded to the municipality status and being in the Smart Cities programme is a move that will attract more traders from far and wide,” said Mirara.
Kangari market attracts traders from Murang’a town, Githurai, Thika among others owing to existing potential based on the area surrounded by tea factories of Ikumbi, Makomboki, Gacharage and Nduti.

“The roads and drainage systems have been ignored through exposing the traders to difficulties during the rainy season,” said Mirara.
