Gikuyu elders have prayed for the Mugumo trees in Kibingoti area in Kirinyaga before they are uprooted to pave way for construction of the dual carriage highway.
The elders from various factions prayed for the two trees to save the community from being plunged in calamities over its destruction.
Mugumo is one of the sacred tree in Mt Kenya region where the traditional rites are done.
The elders came together a week after a section of the elders installed parliament speaker Justin Muturi, the Gema community spokesman at Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga shrine in Murang’a.
Speaking at Kibingoti during the ceremony, Kirinyaga county leaders Peter Gitau and former Mwea MP said there was need for the elders to champion the way forward and avoid dividing the community.
The locals were warned against using the tree branches for fire wood, but should let them decay.
‘ The construction of the highway will shape the economy of Mt Kenya following the leadership of President Uhuru Kenyatta,” said Mr Gitau.
On the coronation of Muturi, said it was a major blunder as majority of the leaders in the community were not consulted
He said that the process was very wrong as many other groups were left
out in the ceremony, raising eyebrows how Muturi was picked to be Mt.
Kenya spokesperson.
The speaker ought to have sessions with community leaders and help resolve issues in the region before the installation.
“We feel conned since the national assembly speaker had sent the Njuri
Ncheke that he wanted to meet us for advice on the coronation, we feel
it was wrong” said Gitau.
On his part the councils’ chairman David Githaka said that they had
invited the Meru elders so that they can introduce who Muturi was in
the group-saying having been left out if Murang’a elders permits them,
they will converge at the Mukurwe Wa Nyagathanga to perform the
rituals that will be for cancelling Muturi’s coronation.
“If Mwangi wa Iria gives us a go ahead if he has seen our today’s
(Friday’s) ceremony, we will converge in Murang’a to perform a
ceremony that will be to cancel Muturi’s coronation” said Githaka.
Mt. Kenya has 9 million voters, he said that the community is divided Mt.
Kirinyaga is already divided due to greed and selfish interest.
We are the anointed members who should perform rituals on behalf of
the Kikuyu community.
“Kikuyu’s living along the mountain are divided for their own
political reasons, they have all been led by greed, they have even
opted to con elders who have been chosen to perform rituals on their
on behalf, if we are not careful we are finished” said Githaka.
Elders in Murang’a have set JUne 4 as the date they will perform rituals at the Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga shrine for the cleansing ceremony.
