Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has warned contractors slowing down completion of critical roads and other infrastructural projects, saying they will be kicked out for sleeping on their jobs.
Prof. Kindiki said there is no room for lazy contractors who are not fulfilling their agreements yet Kenyans are eagerly waiting to benefit from the projects.
“From now on, we have no business with road contractors who delay the work of the people of Kenya yet they have been paid by the Government,” DP said.
Speaking on Tuesday when he inspected development projects in Mathira Constituency, Nyeri County, the Second in Command said his work is to ensure government projects are accomplished on time.
“All the lazy contractors who are slowing down the work assigned to them will be kicked out. My work is to ensure the government’s projects are completed on time and meet required standards. There is no place for those playing around with the work assigned to them,” he emphasized.
On Tuesday, the DP checked the progress of Mungetho–Thuthwa–Kathutho-Katiki Road, which is being tarmacked in the Constituency. Later, he addressed residents at Thutwa trading centre.
The road is among a number of projects under construction in the Constituency. Others at various stages of completion are Muthua–Kiawarigi–Kabiruini, Karura–Kiawarigi and Kiamwangi–Kahuru to Gitemaini Roads.
“This region is home to hardworking farmers. For a long period, this area has been left behind. Milk gets spoiled on the way; when it rains, milk trucks cannot pass, and the milk gets spoiled. These roads are therefore meant to improve dairy and coffee farming,” DP indicated.
In Nyeri County alone, the government has allocated 45 billion shillings for construction of 775 kilometres of roads covering all the six constituencies: Mathira, Othaya, Mukurwe-ini, Kieni, Nyeri Town and Tetu.
Other major projects in the County are expansion of electricity connection to an additional 12, 000 homes following an extra allocation of KSh650 million. There are also 13 modern markets underway, including Marikiti Market, which has just been completed in Karatina town. Also 10 affordable housing and six hostel projects are ongoing.
Ruring’u Stadium in Nyeri Town, which had stalled for more than 15 years, has been revived and progressing. It is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
The Government has allocated 1 billion shillings for the upgrading of Mwai Kibaki Teaching and Referral Hospital in Othaya to Level Six hospital and another 1 billion shillings to revamp Nyeri Level Five Hospital.
Further, the Deputy President urged Mt. Kenya residents to be united stating that political differences should not sow enmity among the communities in the area.
“Those of us who come from this region of Mount Kenya, let us maintain our unity. Let us not fight because of politics. Politics will come and go, but we will continue to be one community,” he said.
He called on politicians not to incite the residents to fight because of affiliations insisting on the democratic right for anyone to support whoever they want.
“All politicians, across all political sides, should calm down. Do not incite citizens to stone someone’s vehicle or harass someone simply because you disagree with them. Sell your politics, sell your policies, and let the other person sell theirs. Let the people decide who will win and lead us. Whoever loses should wait; God will help them another time,” DP emphasized.
The DP was accompanied by Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga, MPs Eric Wamumbi (Mathira), Duncan Mathenge (Nyeri Town), Njoroge Wainaina (Kieni), MCAs among other leaders.
